The strange and terrifying world of DeivantArt.com

So...Deviantart.com.

What shall I say about thee, strange alternate dimension where popular items are anime screen captures and MS Paint scribblings of furry/plushy porn while excellent traditional art is abundant but hardly valued.

Deviantart.com is a land of
fantasy...

...One where Labyrinth era David Bowie would be entirely comfortable.

GOD Bowie is sexy. Photobucket

And all that fantasy and alternate universe-ness can be ordered neatly packaged in matte or glossy prints of varied sizes, post-cards, magnets, on a mug, on a jigsaw puzzle, on a mousepad, on a coaster, or in a calendar. Bowie would be proud.

Deviantart is also host to a lot of really really graphic lesbian porn photography. Sorry folks, no photos. Which can be ordered neatly packaged in matte or glossy prints of varied sizes, post-cards, magnets, on a mug, on a jigsaw puzzle, on a mousepad, on a coaster, or in a calendar.

You'll also see your fair share of sparkly-pretty-whimsical-dreamy

And then there's the wide variety of closeups of ridiculously bright makeup:

And then there's just friggin' cute:

But more than anything on Deviantart.com, more than anything that is fantasy, Bowie, thoughtful sparkly, classical, morbid, pastoral, ominous, complex, makeup-y, cute or Asian...

Deviantart.com is full of Naked.

It is a strange, strange place.

  3. Cool blog you've got here, and thank you again for linking my piece (Cape Cod Cranberry Bog). :)

You're right, DeviantArt is an odd place with representation from almost every conceivable art form. You forgot one biggie: tattoo art. Holy smokes! I created a tattoo for a friend once, I'd hardly consider it my best work, but it's by far my most-viewed and most-favorited piece on DeviantArt.

All that said, it really has a solid Art Community feel to it.

  4. Babs - I LOVE CAPE COD CRANBERRY BLOG.

I live in a small 200 sq. ft. student apartment and I would not insult a print of your work by hanging it up in there but...when I'm a real person with a real person house I'm going on a sweep.

Good point re: the tattoo art. Actually...this inspires me to possibly make a post discussing tattoo oriented items available...perhaps I'll include some devart stuff. I also know of an Etsy seller who does tattoo inspired jewelry which is mucho awesome. yay!

  5. "Babs - I LOVE CAPE COD CRANBERRY BLOG."

Thank you! How flattering. :) I did that piece as a commission for my sister-in-law's 60th birthday. I guess it's hanging in her house (where else) at the Cape, and she tells me that anyone who goes there comments on it.

Before joining deviantART I had no idea the wide-ranging appeal of tattoo art and the things they inspired, including jewelry. T-shirts too, I guess.
